Fast and Dangerous – BBC TopGear Australia

You know that feeling you get sometimes that, even just for a little while, there is just nothing wrong in your world? Thursday was a whole day like that for me.

It is no exaggeration to say that it was the most insane day I’m ever likely to have. Seriously. At my disposal was a fleet of sleek, svelte and sexy two-seater Radical SR3 sports cars, a veritable army of Driving Solutions and Radical Australia staff, and a warm autumn sun beating down on a wide open, empty Eastern Creelk Raceway. Die. Happy. Now.

The Radicals put out about 180kW and weight about 500kg. They run on slicks, sport a sequential gearbox with an electronic flat-changer and feature a full aerodynamic bodykit that really works. And they are utterly, utterly insane to drive.

Six cars (with four guys in each) ran faultlessly all day, and given that these cars are set up with a passenger-side clutch and brake pedal, we each took along a human traction control unit in the form of an instructor. Ours was current CAMS Gold Star holder and F3 champ James Winslow, who patiently brought us plonkers up and along to new heights of speed.

Two of our guys hadn’t even seen pictures of Eastern Creek before their track day, yet they were turning laps at the end that most racers would be pleased to take credit for. Between my first and last laps, I went from a plus-two minute time down to a 1min 39sec lap – easily the fastest I’ve ever been around there. It felt awesome, too; a real challenge, but not something that terrified the soul out of you.
